Emma A. Colman, 81, of Grand Island died Monday, October 27, 2008, at the Grand Island Veterans Home. Services will be at 2:30 PM Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Harold Stromer will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Colman was born September 21, 1927, at Grand Island to Manfred Carl and Sophia A. (Beyersdorf) Dittman. Survivors of the immediate family include one son, Roy Colman of Grand Island; three brothers, John Dittman of Deer River, MN, Carl Dittman of Grand Island and Edward Dittman of Round Rock, TX; and three sisters, Alice Dittman, Elizabeth Enck and Betty Ann Jensen all of Grand Island. Additional survivors include two grandsons, John Colman of Las Vegas, NV and Michael Colman of Corpus Christi, TX. Emma grew up and attended school in Grand Island graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1945. She married Dr. Clyde H. Colman January 12, 1952. Mrs. Colman received her B.S. Degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1966. She also attended Hastings College, Peru State, and Washburn University in Topeka, KS. She did graduate work at Northern Arizona University at Flagstaff, AZ and the University of South Dakota at Madison. She also received endorsements in mil-moderate handicapped K-9 and mentally retarded K-9. She is listed in the 1980-90 edition of Who’s Who in American Education. She taught at Dist. 37 and 58 in Hall County, Hordville, Oxford, Talmage, R-1 Holdrege, Table Rock, Spencer, Lincoln and Grand Island in Nebraska, Madison and Egan in South Dakota and at Lamar, Colorado. Following her retirement, she did substitute teaching in Grand Island. Emma moved to Tiffany Square Care Center in April of 2007 and then to the Grand Island Veterans Home in December of 2007. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and Ruth Circle, a life member of the University of Nebraska Lincoln Alumni Association and Grand Island Senior High Alumni Association. She was a member of the Grand Island Retired Teachers Association and the Nebraska Retired Teachers Association, Eastern Star (Andrew Chapter 41), Past Matrons, VFW Ladies Auxiliary #1347, Grand Island China Painters and the World Organization of China Painters (Nebraska and World). She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Clyde Colman in 1997. Memorials are suggested to Messiah Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund or Grand Island Retired Teachers Association Scholarship Fund.
