Obituary for James Elton Striker

James Elton Striker, 75, of Grand Island passed away peacefully on May 3, 2020 at Lakeview Nursing Home in Grand Island, NE. Cause of death was Covid-19, Pneumonia and heart disease. 

James wishes were to be cremated and there will be a memorial service and burial at a later date.  

James was born in Ord, Nebraska on October 16, 1944 to Franklin and Nida (Edwards), Striker. The family lived in Cedar Rapids. When James was 3 or 4, they moved to Grand Island.  

He worked various jobs in the area including a cab driver for City Cab/Yellow Cab. In 1970 James married Bernadine (Cochran) Roy and was blessed with two children, Ernest William Roy (Bill) and Tina Marie Roy. The following year the couple was blessed with their daughter, Candace June Striker, (Candy). 

In his later years, James like to pass time working crossword puzzles or playing cards at the Brunswick. He loved playing the slot machines at the Casinos in South Dakota and Council Bluffs and usually came back a few hundred ahead. In 2019 he was granted a "Dream Wish" to Council Bluffs, IA, where he was taken by limo to the Casinos.  

James is survived by two sisters, LaVone Gelder and Sharene Lin Peterson Maske (Terry) of Grand Island, NE, his son Ernest Roy, daughter Tina (Roy) Brock, of Strawberry Plains, TN, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  

He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin Striker; mother, Nida Ganow; his daughter, Candy Kinzie; his brother, Harold Fothergill; his sister, Violet (Striker) Borges; one granddaughter, Emily Stacey Devereaux (Tina); one nephew and two nieces.
