James (Jim) H. Powers, 49, of Grand Island died unexpectedly Thursday, February 19, 2009 at home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Tuesday at Third City Christian Church with the Reverend Scott Jones officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4-8 pm Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6-8 pm. Memorials are suggested to the Cody and Brady Powers Educational Fund. He was born on August 29, 1959 at Marshalltown, IA to Dave and Rose (Higham) Powers. When Jim was in the fourth grade the family moved to Grand Island. He attended Grand Island Public Schools and graduated from Senior High in 1977. Following high school he attended Chadron State and Kearney State College. He was united in marriage to Melinda Maloley on August 17, 1985 at Grand Island. The couple made their home in Grand Island where he worked for Montfort’s and Professional Services. In 2003 he began working for the United States Postal Service. Jim was a member of the Elks. His pride and joy were his boys, Cody and Brady. Together they enjoyed golfing, swimming, and watching Professional Wrestling. He was also an avid Nebraska Football and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He survived by his wife, Melinda of Grand Island; two sons: Cody and Brady of Grand Island; his parents Dave and Rose Powers of Grand Island; a brother Jeff and his wife Anita of Grand Island; a sister in law and brother in law Michele and Fred Day of Omaha; a brother in law and sister in law Mike and Ronda Maloley of Lexington; brother in law and sister in law Monte and Kami Maloley of Omaha; nieces and nephews: Alec and Haley Powers, Travis, Torri and Terah Maloley and Kaylan, Nate and Stewart Maloley and a grandmother in law Pauline Dodson. He was preceded in death by an infant sister Laura, his grandparents: George and Anna Powers and James and Edna Higham, his father in law and mother in law: Zickie and Bonnie Maloley.
