Obituary for Marian Rose Terry

Marian Rose Terry, a Grand Island resident for over fifty-five years passed away October 16 at CHI Health St. Francis Hospital surrounded by her family.

Services are 11:00 AM, Monday, October 22 at the Livingston- Sondermann Funeral Home. Visitation is from 10:00 to 11:00 AM prior to the service.

Marian was born nearly 102 years ago on November 17, 1916 in Salix, Iowa to Maurice Mulvihill and Mae (Beaubien) Mulvihill.

After graduating high school, Marian attended Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA and Wayne State in Wayne, NE.  She received her normal training certificate and began her teaching career at Petersburg, NE.

In 1941, Marian married Fred E. Terry and together they raised their eight children.  In 1959 after all her children were of school age, Marian returned to teaching.  During the summer she studied at Peru State College to earn her B.A. in Education.

Marian and Fred moved to Grand Island in 1963 and Marian taught school in Phillips, NE for fourteen years and retired in 1977.  Besides teaching in Phillips and Petersburg, Marian taught in Neligh, Royal, Marquette and Aurora.

Marian lived her life by the Golden Rule, “treat others as you would want to be treated”. This and the great love for her family got her through many tough times in life.

Marian is survived by her eight children and their spouses, Suzanne (Willis) Luedke of Crete, NE, Cleo Wright of Lincoln, NE, Mary (Dave) Thor of Billings, MT, Fred (Marcia) Terry of Topeka, KS, Philip (Linda) Terry of Huntsville, AL, Larry (Karen) Terry of Grand Island, NE, Marcia Patterson of Grand Island, NE and Martha Morris of Lincoln, NE.

Marian is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one sister, Edith Powell; and one brother, Louis Mulvihill. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred E. Terry; infant son, Mark James; infant granddaughter, Julie Elizabeth; and sons-in-law, Michael Patterson and Robert E. Wright; three sisters, Ellie Lamoureux, Ann Hungerford and Grace Chilton; and three brothers, Michael Mulvihill, Patrick Mulvihill and James Mulvihill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to AseraCare Hospice or Tiffany Square Care Center. Online condolences may be directed to Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
