Ralph R. Chapman, 83, formerly of Cairo, died Saturday November 3, 2007, in Long Beach, CA from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Memorial services will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday November 17, 2007, at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Pastor Barry Arndt of the Dannebrog First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites provided by the United Veteran’s Honor Guard. There will be no visitation, Mr. Chapman’s body was cremated. Ralph was born on March 27, 1924 at Blunt County, TN to James F. and Berth (Niamo) Chapman. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife Emma; two daughters and one son-in-law, Dianna and Tim Alberts of Dannebrog and Helen Brott of Jackson, CA; and two brothers, Sam and Phillip Chapman. Additional survivors include eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He spent most of his childhood in Tennessee. In 1943 he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and was stationed at McCook Air Base where he met his wife, Emma. The couple married on February 3, 1944, in Georgia. Ralph served in the European Theatre of Operations during World War II. He flew 32 missions over Germany. Following his military service, he worked in the construction business in McCook and Tennessee. In 1968, he and Emma moved to Grand Island where Ralph worked as the electric and grounds supervisor for Grand Island Public Schools. He held that position until 1984. In June of 1984 they moved to San Jose, CA. Following retirement in 1992 they moved to Loveland, CO where they lived until 2005. They then moved to Cairo, NE where they lived until Ralph’s health declined. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ronald Chapman; one grandson, Tom; three brothers; and one sister. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Alzheimer’s research.
