Obituary

Abelardo "Abe" Esquitin, 85, of Grand Island, passed away April 1, 2026 with his family by his side.

Services will 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 10, 2026 at St. Mary's Cathedral with Father Jorge Canela officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Inurnment will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Family to be designated at a later date. Abe was born in Brownsville, TX on June 19, 1940 to Teresa Esquitin. He grew up in Brownsville and graduated high school in 1959. He enlisted into The United States Air Force on August 1960. He was stationed in Lincoln, NE in 1961 where he fell in love with his wife Theresa. The couple married on February 18, 1963, which was the start of their big family. They traveled the world together in The Air Force until his retirement from the military in 1981 and that is when they moved to Grand Island. Abe worked at Monforts then Platte River By-Products/Darling International, he also translated for the City. He later retired and spent time with his kids and grandkids that he loved so much.

He impacted everyone he met through the way he lived.

Abe is survived by his children, Richard (Brenda) Esquitin, Connie (Mike) Helzer, Sunday (Rick) Neeman, Angie (Ruben) Luna; grandkids, Anthony, Jessica, Echo, Danielle, Rachel, Appol, Alex, Andrew, Gabbie, Savannah, Richard, Easton, Brittney, Kyle; 31 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in passing by his wife, Theresa; mother, Teresa; grandson, Nathanael.
