Anna Evalene Day, 93, died November 12, 2015 in Queen Creek, Arizona. Memorial service will be 10:30 am Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Livingston-Sondermann Chapel with Russ Anderson officiating. Burial will be Monday in the Ord Cemetery. Online condolences may be directed to livson.com.
Anna Evalene was born to Henry and Anna Maree (Ludington) VanSlyke on January 10, 1922. She joined two sisters, Eva (VanSlyke) Huenber and Marie (VanSlyke) McNanee; two brothers, Arthur VanSlyke and Floyd VanSlyke to complete a family of five children. Evalene was raised on the farm. As she got older she took over the duties of caring for the house and cooking. She played piano and accordion for dances, and enjoyed sewing and crocheting.
On February 28, 1945, she was united in marriage to Harold Glenn Day in Grand Island, NE. At the time of their marriage, they were working on a farm near North Loup, NE. In1946, Harold and Evalene bought and managed a café in Greeley, NE. They later sold the café, and went to work for Rob Smith Lumber Company. At the time they were in Greeley, their children were born. Donald Lee on August 26, 1946 and Shirley Ann on February 7, 1948.
In 1948, they moved to Erickson, Dannebrog, and Elba doing farming jobs. Late in 1949, they purchased the produce station in Cotesfield, NE; where they resided until moving to Grand Island in 1974. While in Cotesfield, along with managing the produce station, Evalene, took census for the US Census Bureau, mapped out plots for aerial spraying, sold Avon, and played organ at the Top Hat Supper Club in Grand Island. From 1965 through 1982, she traveled the fair circuit playing music accompaniment for the acts at the county fairs. After retirement, Harold and Evalene bought and remodeled houses to rent. Do to health reasons, they sold the rentals and fully retired.
Evalene is survived by two children: Don Day from Grand Island, NE and Shirley Harmon from Queen Creek, AZ; 5 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandson.
Preceding her in death was her husband: Harold; brothers; sisters; infant son: Dale; and granddaughter: Saundra Day.
