Obituary

Betty Jean Merkel, 72, of Grand Island passed away Sunday, June 17 at Westfield Quality Care in Aurora.

Memorial Services will be 2:00 PM, Saturday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Island with Pastor Sheri Lodel officiating. There will be a visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home Chapel.

Betty was born December 14, 1945 at Mobridge, SD to Henry and Lydia (Hertel) Speidel. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from McLaughlin High School in McLaughlin, SD.

She married Eugene "Gene" Merkel on June 12, 1964 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLaughlin. After marriage they lived in Rapid City where they had their son, Gregg. They later moved to Los Alamos, NM where they had their daughter, Kimberle. Before settling in Grand Island, they moved to various locations because of Gene's employment.

For most of Betty's life, she worked in retail and customer service, with her latest employment being in customer service at U Save Grocery Store.

She loved home interior decorating, various crafts and loved entertaining friends and especially spending time with her sisters and her entire family.

Betty enjoyed collecting Angels, Snowbabies, Beanie Babies and listening to country music.She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church.

Those left to cherish Betty's memory are her husband of 54 years, Gene; her children and their spouses, Gregg and Macaire Merkel of Stafford, VA and Kimberle Hoerle and Doug Bloomquist of Grand Island; grandchildren, Carson Armstrong Merkel and Reagan Patterson Merkel, both of Stafford, VA; sisters and their spouses, Viola and Milton Merkel of Orting, WA, DeLores and Leo Hartung of Hoven, SD, Ruby Volk of Anoka, MN, Edna Neuharth of Eureka, SD and Darlene and Alan Zwink of Grand Island; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded by her parents; her in-laws, Gust and Hilda Merkel. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
