Obituary

Burdett J. Riese, 92, of Lincoln, formerly of Doniphan, died March 31, 2017, at Lancaster Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln, NE. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. Father Marty Egging will celebrate. Following the lunch, burial will be at Cedar View Cemetery in Doniphan. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7 PM with a family led Rosary and sharing time at 7 PM at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Daycare Foster Grandparents Program.

Burdett was born on August 27, 1924, in Holstein, NE, to John H. and Agnes C. (Kolbet) Riese. He grew up in Hall County and attended Doniphan Public Schools; graduating in 1941.

He was united in marriage to Betty Jean Hoppe on November 29, 1947, at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. The couple lived in and farmed near Doniphan. He was a delivery man for Ben's Pharmacy. He later worked as maintenance at Miller and Paine and St. Francis.

Burdett was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Doniphan and later Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. He was active in many school and community groups, including the Volunteer Fire Department in Doniphan and the Foster Grandparents program in Grand Island. He enjoyed reading Western novels, spending time with children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and coffee time with his brothers.

Burdett is survived by his children: Terry (JoAnn) Riese of Olmitz, KS, Judy Bell of Lincoln, NE, Bonnie (Dennis) Pittz of Hastings, NE, and Beth Burk of Jacksonville, TX; eleven grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; brothers: Rolland (Elda) Riese, Gerald (Sharlene) Riese both of Grand Island; brother-in-law: Bob (Pat) Hoppe of Springfield, NE.

He was preceded in death by parents; wife: Betty in 2012; and sons-in-law: Rod Bell and Tom Burk.
