Obituary

Charles Dean McGrath, a local physician and life-long Grand Island resident, passed away peacefully at Good Samaritan Village on Friday morning, January 26.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to the Grand Island Public Schools Foundation, or Stanford University. Online condolences and sharing of memories may be directed to www.livson.com. Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

Dr. McGrath was born on February 29, 1924 to Gladys and W. D. McGrath in Grand Island. He attended Grand Island public schools, followed by college graduation from Stanford University, where he was also enlisted in the Navy. He then attended Stanford Medical School, followed by a medical residency at The Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, where he met his future bride Margaret ("Peg") Bambrick, who was a nurse at Pres. They married on July 14, 1951 in Chicago.

Dr. McGrath, who was by then on active duty in the Navy, was stationed in Japan from 1951 until 1953, where his wife Peg joined him in 1952.  They returned briefly to Chicago in 1953 while awaiting the birth of their first child and completing his military service.

Dr. McGrath returned to Grand Island in 1953, where he went into medical practice with his father W.D., and he continued practicing as a physician in Grand Island until his retirement in 1992. Along with another local physician, Dr. Robert Koefoot, they built a new building on Custer Street in the 1970's to house their respective Internal Medical Associates and Surgical Associates practices.

Dean was an avid boater and pilot, enjoying many happy years at their second home in the Bahamas until 2014, and he never tired of the daily cocktail hour at 5pm, right up until the very end.

Dr. McGrath is survived by his wife of 66 years, Peg; four children Charles Dean McGrath Jr. (Pat Bryan) of Alexandria, VA; Melissa Ann ("Lisa") McGrath (Jim Kinnally) of Huntsville, AL; Kerry W. McGrath (Renee Meister) of Grand Island, and Martha Jean ("Marcy") Kovar (Jeff Kovar) of Salem, OR; and eight grandchildren.
