Obituary

Carmen M. Santos, 84, of Grand Island died Monday, October 20, 2014 at Golden Living Parkplace.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am Thursday at St. Mary's Cathedral. Fr. Thomas Ryan will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Wednesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home with a 7 pm rosary.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Carmen was born on April 20, 1930 in Hastings, Ne to Esteban J. Herrera, Sr. and Lourdez (Tejeda) Herrera. She grew up and received her education in Hastings.
She was united in marriage to Elijio D.T. Santos, Jr. on July 30, 1949 at Shelton, Nebraska. The couple lived in Shelton, Hastings and Wood River before moving to Grand Island in 1971. After her youngest child started school, Carmen worked at various places. She retired from the VA Medical Center. Mr. Santos preceded her in death in 2003.
Carmen was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral. She enjoyed scrapbooking for her family, cooking, dancing and sewing. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.
She is survived by four sons, Joe Santos and his wife Kay of Omaha, Carlos Santos of Hastings, David Santos of Grand Island, and Johnny Santos and his wife Kim of Grand Island; two daughters, Ramona Santos of Grand Island and Mary Santos of Hastings; 19 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and two brothers, Esteban J. Herrera, Jr. of Mexico, and Pete Hernandez of California.
Carmen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant daughter, Rebecca, two grandchildren, Michael Melgoza and Amanda Santos, and two sisters, Tomasita Kern and in infant sister.
