Obituary

Donald F. Huismann, 90, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the Grand Island Veterans' Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am Saturday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Reverend Donald Buhrman will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home with a scripture wake service at 7 pm.
Memorials are suggested to Grand Island Central Catholic or Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Mr. Huismann was born on March 5, 1924 in Clarkson, Nebraska to Gerhard and Martha (Steiner) Huismann. He grew up on a farm south of Clarkson and graduated from Clarkson High School in 1941. Following high school he attended Grand Island Business School.
He entered the United States Coast Guard in 1943, serving aboard the frigate U.S.S. Sausalito until his honorable discharge in 1946.
Donald was united in marriage to Rita M. Heitz on September 17, 1946 in Schuyler, Nebraska. In 1947 they moved to Grand Island and he began his career with Lacy Construction. Mrs. Huismann preceded him in death on October 6, 2011.
He was a charter member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Past President of Riverside Golf Club Board of Directors and Holding Association and Past President of Associated General Contractors of Nebraska.  Don also was a member of the Liederkranz, Grand Island Central Catholic Foundation, the Grand Island Area Chamber of Commerce and the Presidents Club.
Survivors of the immediate family include his children; Marcia Brown of Denver, CO, Pat and her husband Larry Anderson of Grand Island, Donna Anderson of Grand Island, Jerry and his wife Lisa Huismann of Grand Island, and Julie and her husband Melvin Griess of Grand Island.
He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and a sister, Mary Ann Spulak of Leigh, NE.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter, Linda, a grandson, Chris Brown, three brothers, Gary, Herman and Harold Huismann, and two sisters, Elizabeth Mohnsen and Dolores Shannon.
