Dorothy was born September 29, 1920 at Loup City, NE to Stanley and Katie (Otlewski) Schachta. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from Loup City High School with the class of 1938. After graduating she worked at Farnham Pharmacy in Loup City.
She was united in marriage to Joseph C. Tenski on June 2, 1943 at St. Josaphat Catholic Church in Loup City. To this union 9 children were born: James, Jerome, Daniel, Mary, Ronald, Joann, Ted, Sharon and Andrew.
Joe and Dorothy farmed around Loup City from 1943 to 1971. She was a dedicated homemaker and mother. She worked alongside her husband doing chores that the family farm required such as cooking for the family, milking cows and gardening. One interesting fact is that Dorothy never had a drivers license her entire life. She relied on her husband and various family members and friends to get her wherever she needed to go.
The family moved to Grand Island in 1971 after her husband's illness prevented him to continue to farm. After moving to Grand Island, Dorothy started working at Park Place Nursing Home as a nurses aide. She later worked at the Grand Island Veterans Home as a cook and baker for 12 years until her retirement in 1985. After retiring she worked for the Foster Grandparents program at West Lawn Elementary with Grand Island Public Schools for over 10 years.
Dorothy enjoyed playing bingo and cards. She also loved embroidering and quilting, where she made a quilt for each of her children. She always enjoyed watching the ponies run at Fonner Park and loved to listen to polka music. Her strong Catholic upbringing was very important to her.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church and their Altar Society. She attended Mass every Sunday without fail until her health prevented her from attending.
