Obituary

Edward A. "Eddie" Dingwerth, 94, of Grand Island died Saturday, May 6, at home with family by his side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, May 12 at St. Mary's Cathedral with The Reverend James Golka officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM, Thursday, May 11 at Livingston Sondermann Funeral Home with a Catholic Rosary at 7 PM.

Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date. Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. Online condolences may be directed to www.livson.com.

Mr. Dingwerth was born January 25, 1923 at Raeville, NE to Edward and Josephine (Seier) Dingwerth.

Ed grew up in St. Libory and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1942.
In 1943, Ed joined the service. He was a member of the 27th Infantry Division attached to the 5th Amfib Corps and Special Training. He was one of the first troops to land in Japan. Ed was discharged November 25, 1945.

Following discharge, he went to work at Red Rooster Sales Company as an employee. Ed later purchased the company. He retired in 1996 after 51 years.

He was united in marriage to Shirley McGuire on April 17, 1947 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. Ed & Shirley were married for 56 years. Shirley died December 17, 2003.

Ed was a member of the American Legion Post 53 and The Platt-Duetsche. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards and going to the horse races. Ed loved anything to do with Nebraska sports and Kansas City Royals baseball.

Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law Jerry and Donna of Grand Island; daughter and son-in-law Debi and Jerry Pieper of Grand Island.

Also surviving are grandchildren, Tammy and John Dahlstrom of Omaha, Shelley and Mike Loewe of Albany, GA, and Chad and Yolanda Pieper of Grand Island; Great-grandchildren, Jackson and Avery Dahlstrom, Madison and Tyler Loewe, and Owen and Carston Pieper; sister-in-law Eileen Dingwerth of Grand Island; and Special friends, Jimmy Caveny of Ponca City, OK and Margaret Cosgriff of Doniphan.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Norbert and Francis; and sister, Marcella Burke.
