Ellen E. (Kallos) Parmley, age 92, of Grand Island, NE. died peacefully surrounded by family Friday, November 23, 2012 at Tiffany Square in Grand Island, NE.
Ellen was born on February 3, 1920 in Grand Island the daughter of John and Georgina (Malonis) Kallos. Ellen was raised and educated in Grand Island and graduated from GI Senior High in 1938. In 1944, Ellen went to work at the GI Cornhusker Army Ammunition plant where she operated a "donkey" and where she met Robert. They were married on March 21, 1947 in Grand Island NE. Ellen and Robert purchased Ellen's Flower Basket in 1963 which was operated by Ellen until 1998.
Ellen enjoyed league bowling, collecting antiques, serving on the Women's Chamber of Commerce and Women's Business Association. She participated in various events sponsored by the Greek Orthodox Church and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. But Ellen's real passion, when not behind the counter at her flower shop, was buying and refurbishing old homes which she then rented to the public.
Ellen will be remembered by all who came into contact with her as savvy business women with a big heart. She was known in the community for her generosity that always had time for the less fortunate.
Survivors of the immediate family include: sons Robert (Paula) of Phoenix, AZ; Michael of Utica, NE; David (Dianne) of Grand Island; daughter Cynthia Arnold of Grand Island; sisters Anna Hartley of Bradenton, FL and Rena Link of Duluth, MN. Also left to cherish her memory are seven grandchildren Robert, Christina, Jill, David, Jeff, Michael, Alaina and thirteen great grandchildren.
Ellen was preceded in death by husband Robert W. Parmley on January 26, 2001, parents John and Georgina Kallos and brothers Chris and Nick Kallos.
Memorials are suggested to the Grand Generation Center in Grand Island.
Funeral service is Monday, November 26, 2012 at 10:00 am at the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Grand Island with burial at the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-8 pm till with family greeting friends from 4-5 and Trisagion prayers offered at 5 at Livingston Sondermann Funeral Home.
