Obituary

Harold Kenneth Lunberry, 91, of Grand Island, died October 9, 2013 at Good Samaritan Village in Grand Island, with family at his side.
Funeral services will be at 11 am Monday, October 21, 2013 at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Reverend Gary Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Messiah Lutheran Church, Goodwill Industries or the Lions Eye Bank.
Mr. Lunberry was born May 23, 1922, at Holdrege, Nebraska, to Allen E. and Maggie (Renquist) Lunberry.
Survivors of the immediate family include a daughter, Karen Phelps of Columbia, MD, and a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Diane Lunberry of Lincoln, NE.
Additional survivors include six grandchildren, Christopher Phelps and his wife Jodi Trautman, Timothy Phelps, Stephanie Caporaletti and her husband Matthew, Gregory Phelps, Ryan Lunberry and Jennifer Lunberry; and two great grandchildren, Kaylen and Justin Caporaletti.
Harold entered the United States Air Corp. on October 2, 1942, also the day his father died of a heart attack. He was stationed in England during World War II for two and a half years. He was honorably discharged in January 1946.
Harold was united in marriage to Bernita J. Schult of Bertrand on June 9, 1946, in Holdrege, NE. They lived in Hastings where he worked for Safeway until 1954, when he was appointed manager of the store in Oberlin, KS. He later was transferred to the Gothenburg store until he resigned in 1963 to move to Grand Island to go into the insurance business.  He became an agent for Security Mutual Life Insurance Co. He served this company for 30 years and retired in 1993. During his years as an insurance agent he went through the offices of the Grand Island Life Underwriters, received the Founders Award and was the past President.
He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church of Grand Island and was one of the founders and officers of Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings. Harold was also a member of the Lions Club for 40 years, serving all the offices, including President. He also started the Lions Mint program in Grand Island.
Harold enjoyed family, especially his grandchildren, and traveling. Harold and Bernita spent 17 winters at their home in Arizona. He also enjoyed golf, woodworking and working in his yard.
Mr. Lunberry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Bernita, a son-in-law, Robert Phelps, two brothers, Dale and Paige Lunberry, and three sisters, Ruth Young, Violet Young and Faye Young.
