Helen M. Nabity, 90, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016, at Good Samaritan Society — Grand Island Village.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m., Monday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. James Golka will be the Celebrant. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Family will be greeting friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at St. Leo's Church. A Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. following the visitation. Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home of Grand Island is in charge of the arrangements.
Helen was born Dec. 1, 1926, in Hazleton, Pa., to Thomas and Anna (Kaschak) Matas. She attended school in Hazleton, graduating in 1944. She attended St. Agnes School of Nursing at St. Agnes Hospital in Philadelphia, graduating in 1948.
She married Dr. Stanley F. Nabity, June 6, 1949, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hazleton.
The couple moved to Grand Island in 1952 where Dr. Nabity joined a medical practice at the Grand Island Clinic until his retirement in 1994.
She had been a member of St. Mary's Altar Society, St. Francis Medical Center Auxiliary, Grand Island Medical Auxiliary, Grand Island China Painting Club and various bridge clubs. She was past president of St. Mary's Altar Society and St. Francis Medical Center Auxiliary.
Helen was skilled at making everyone else happy. Things were never about her, and she had a knack for seeing needs nobody else could. She loved her family and friends with gifts and food and never saw anything or anyone in which or whom she couldn't find beauty. She was compassionate, witty, sincere and genuine, and because of that, people felt honored to be her friend. And "For God's sake, she always looked cute."
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Dr. Stanley F. Nabity of Grand Island; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Thomas and Jeanne Nabity of Grand Island; five daughters and sons-in-laws, Jacalyn and George Ayoub of Grand Island, Karen and Dave Olson of Grand Island, Denice and Gregg Aten of Lincoln, Drs. Mary Ellen and Christopher Gilles of Tucson, Ariz., and Kristi and Mark Frei of Omaha; a sister, Bernadine "Deanie" (Tom) Wanek of Aurora; 15 grandchildren and two step grandchildren; Rebecca Olson and her husband Scott of Rockford, Ill., Dr. Thomas Nabity Jr. and his wife Emily of Rochester Hills, Mich., Jeff Nabity of Denver, Max Ayoub, of Kearney, Gatkek Gatchay-Olson of Camp Pendleton, Calif. Dakota Olson of Grand Island, Kelly Heavican and her husband Jim of Bennington, Tari Hess and her husband Casey of Arnold, Mo., Alison Rash and her husband Bryan of Lincoln, Jonathon Aten and his wife Laura of Lincoln, Dr. Alex Aten and his wife Marcela of Lincoln, Grant Gilles of San Francisco, Helen Gilles of Durham N. C., Gregory Gilles of Tucson, Ariz.; Maggie Frei of New York City, Samuel Frei of Omaha, and William Frei of Hastings; 14 great grandchildren, Aldyn and Boden Olson of Rockford, Ill., Genevieve Penn-Nabity, Kyla, Henry, and Allison Nabity of Rochester Hills, Mich., Jacob Heavican of Bennington, Flynn and Zuzu Rash of Lincoln, Gavin, Myles, and Landon Aten of Lincoln, Kyran and Aliya Aten of Lincoln; and numerous niece and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Anne O'Lear and her husband Joseph of Tamaqua, Pa., and a great grandson, Grayson Aten of Lincoln.
