Irma Lillian Nelson Peterson, 95, of Grand Island, died on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island. To honor Irma's wishes, cremation has taken place and burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
She was born Dec. 31, 1919 in Cumberland, WI, the daughter of Conrad and Jennie Nelson. After the divorce of her parents, she and her mother and several brothers moved to Nebraska. She graduated from Nebraska City High School with the class of 1937.
She was married to Allen Boyd "Joe" Peterson on Feb. 17, 1940 in South Sioux City, NE. For a short while they lived in Yankton, SD and Norfolk, NE before moving to Grand Island in 1941.
She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and was served at the care center by Rev. Sheri Lodel. She loved seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren; she enjoyed going dancing with her husband, attending the dinner theatre, shopping and having lunch with her friends.
She is survived by her four children and spouses, Peggy Peterson and Keith Prouty of Alsea, OR, Nancy and Bill Vase of Rock Springs, WY, Jean Peterson of Grand Island and Rex and Janet Peterson of Lincoln, NE. Her grandchildren and spouses are Julie Hart and Carl McClellan of Corvallis, OR., Lane and Tina McSweeney of Glendale, AZ, Miles and Joyce Vase of Rock Springs, WY, Amanda and Anthony Wasser of Martell, NE and Lindsey Peterson of Lincoln, NE. Her great grandchildren are Austin and Spencer Hart, Mark McSweeney, Brooklynn and Brody Vase and Charlotte Wasser plus several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brothers, Lloyd, Edwin, Johnny and Art Nelson
To honor Irma's wishes, cremation has taken place and burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. No memorial services will take place at this time. Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is serving the family.
In honor of Irma and in lieu of flowers or other memorials, her friends and relatives are invited to perform a random act of kindness in her memory.
