Jeanette Myrtle Hansen, 89, of Grand Island, NE passed away Monday, September 10, 2018 at the CHI Health St. Francis Medical Center.
Memorial Services will be at 2:00 PM, Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Chapel with Pastor Lisa Ewald officiating.
Mrs. Hansen was born March 13, 1929 at Lewis, Iowa, the oldest daughter of George and Burnidette (Doty) Brown. Her mother died of childbirth when Jeanette was 12. When she was 14, along with her brothers and sisters were placed at the Christian Orphanage Home in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Dennis the youngest son stayed on the farm with their father.
She attended school at Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs and graduated in 1946. She went on to college at the Omaha University and graduated with her Bachelors Degree in 1950. She did her internship as a Dietician in Colorado, which she worked as for many years in Omaha and Grand Island.
Jeanette was united in marriage to Clayton Lee Hansen on September 3, 1950 at Pueblo, Colorado.
Jeanette was very active in her community. She was a master gardener for the extension office. She was Nebraska State President and local president of the Garden Clubs of America. She volunteered at the Grand Island Public Library for 35 years, and was recognized as Outstanding Volunteer of the year. She loved her garden of vegetables and flowers. She published her own cook book "Simplified Cooking". She was an active member of her Extension Club. She also was on the committee that published The Grand Island Independents, "The Silver Spoon Cook Book" for its lifetime.
She is survived by three sons, Steven D. and his wife Cynthia (Dibbern) Hansen of Cairo, Russell L. and his wife Deb (Andelt) Hansen of Kearney, Grant W. and his wife Pam (Pointer) of Grand Island; five grandchildren, Jared Hansen, Kendra Hansen, Brian Hansen, Kayla Hansen, Sara and her husband Alvin Mayes; one great-granddaughter, Mia Riekenberg; one sister, Carol Jean Dorsch of Omaha; and one sister in law, Charlene Hansen of Blue Grass, Iowa.
Mrs. Hansen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clayton in 2013; six brothers, Delbert, Dennis, Lee, Eugene, Neal, and George; and two sisters, Rose Ella Dahlin, and Burnidette Long.
