Obituary

John Dale Hendrix, 88, of Grand Island, NE, passed away April 26, 2016 at CHI Health-St. Francis Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Monday, May 2, 2016 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church with Pastor Edgar Schambach officiating. Interment will be at Grand Island City Cemetery following the service. A visitation is scheduled from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Sunday, May 1 at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be directed to the Grand Island Public School Foundation or to St. Pauls Lutheran Church.
John was born on August 29, 1927 at Benkelman, NE to William Harley and Nellie Blanche (Collins) Hendrix. He joined the United States Army on December 12, 1945 and was Honorably Discharged on November 12, 1946.He went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Masters of Science in Education from the Nebraska State Teachers College in Kearney, and a Graduate Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of Nebraska. He began his career in education as a business teacher and principal at Wilcox, NE and continued as a school guidance counselor at Walnut Junior High until his retirement in 1992.
He was united in marriage to Mabel Haack on November 27, 1953. In his early years Johnnie played baseball for Loup City and lettered in tennis while in college. He went on to become an avid Husker football fan and a Fonner Park Racing enthusiast. He also enjoyed hanging out with his friends at Coney Island.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mabel Haack; two daughters, Nancy Chavez of Grand Island, and Jean (Perry) Menard of Omaha; grandchildren, Garret (Margaret) Menard, Connor Menard, and Serena Chavez.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; five brothers; and son-in-law, Donnie Chavez.
