Obituary

John Charles Houselog, 81, of Grand Island died Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Grand Island.
Memorial services will be at 2:30 pm Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island. Fr. Richard Piontkowski will officiate.  Cremation services were provided by Westlawn Memorial Park.
Mr. Houselog was born on April 2, 1930 in Lake Benton, Minnesota to John B. and Arlie (Pease) Houselog. He grew up and received his education in Pipestone, MN.
John entered the United States Air Force in April 1949, serving during the Korean War. He was honorable discharged in November of 1952.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Roush on September 20, 1952 in Grand Island. Afterwhich the couple made their home in Grand Island. John worked at Missouri Valley Construction, REA/Southern NE Rural Public Power and later owned and operated Johnny's Palace in Worms, NE. After selling his tavern in 1985 he tended bar at Ed and Net's and Shady Bend Tavern.
Survivors include his wife Shirley Houselog of Grand Island; a son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Cindy Houselog of Grand Island; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Monica and Tim Taber of Doniphan, Jonette Gakle of Grand Island and Loretta and Jay Stines of Omaha.
He is also survived by five grandchildren; Nicole Meier, Brittany Houselog, Timmy Taber, John Paul Gakle and Molly Gakle; and two great granddaughters, Hailey Gakle and Mariah Houselog.
John was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, three brothers and three sisters.
