John P. Tooley, 71, of Grand Island died Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at home.
Mass of Resurrection will be at 10:30 am Friday, August 19 at St. Mary's Cathedral. Father James J. Janovec will officiate. There will be no visitation. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in Central City, Nebraska.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is serving the family.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.
Mr. Tooley was born on September 15, 1939 in Grand Island to John J. and Helen P. (Phelps) Tooley. He grew up in Grand Island and attended St. Mary's Elementary School and graduated from Grand Island Central Catholic, and the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and attended the University of Nebraska Law School.
He entered the United States Army on June 2, 1957, serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was honorably discharged September 27, 1964.
Throughout his life John lived in Los Angeles, CA, Cheyenne, WY and Las Vegas, NV where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and Greyhound Bus. He returned to Grand Island in 2001.
John was an avid baseball fan and especially loved the St. Louis Cardinals and the Anaheim Angels.
Survivors of the immediate family include a brother, David Tooley and his wife Marilynn of Lone Tree, CO; a niece, Kristin Tooley of Lone Tree, CO; and a nephew David Tooley II and his wife Anne of Littleton, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
