Obituary

Leola Joy "Lee" "Grandma Joy" Baasch, 87, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Caroline Price-Gibson will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Chapel.
Mrs. Baasch was born Jan. 13, 1924, at Colton, S.D., to Clifton and Eleanor (Egan) Scott.
She was united in marriage to Clayton C. Baasch on April 26, 1975, in Sioux Falls, S.D. He preceded her in death.
Survivors of the immediate family include a daughter, Peggy Holtorf; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Beverly Remme and Marilyn and Roger Reiff; and a sister-in-law, Alyce Scott.
She is also survived by a granddaughter, Heather (David) Sandsted; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She grew up and graduated from Colton High School in Colton, S.D., in 1941. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1956 with a degree in distinction   Elementary Education. In 1988, she graduated with a Masters from U.N.K., Education Administration. She taught in Lyons, S.D., Lincoln and Grand Island. She was the principal in Grand Island from 1990 until 1998.
She initiated and conducted Young Authors Conferences locally and State of Nebraska for one year.
She was a past member of Grand Island Education Association, State of Nebraska Elementary Principals Association, Altrusa, Kiwanis, Literacy Council of Grand Island, alpha Delta Kappa-Epsiton Chapter. She volunteered for more than 1,000 hours at St. Francis Medical Center.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Lowell Scott, a sister, Jeanne Carlberg, two brothers-in-law, Ronald Remme and Aubrey Carlberg, a son-in-law, Russell Holtorf and a nephew, Mike Scott.
