Mabel Emma Hendrix, 91, of Grand Island, NE, passed away April 6, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Tuesday, April 11 2017 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church with Pastor Edgar Schambach officiating. Interment will be at Grand Island City Cemetery following the service. A visitation is scheduled from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Monday, April 10 at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Chapel.

Mabel was born on May 13, 1925 at Grand Island, NE to John H. and Emma (Brabender) Haack. She grew up in Grand Island and attended Grand Island Senior High School, graduating in 1943. After graduating, she returned to GISH where she was secretary to the principal. She went on to become secretary to the Grand Island City Manager. She later was a homemaker for her family after her daughters were born.
She was united in marriage to John Hendrix on November 27, 1953. They met at the Glovera and continued their love of dancing throughout their lives. She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church for her entire life. She volunteered in many capacities; such as being in charge of communion setup and cleanup, helping to serve and cleanup for senior programs and helping with vacation bible school.
She taught water exercise classes at the YMCA with her sister Eleanor. She loved to read, passing that love on to her daughters. She also enjoyed working the Sunday Omaha World Herald crossword puzzles. She enjoyed time spent with family, especially her grandchildren. Throughout her life, she treasured her close friends, old and new.
Mabel is survived by her two daughters, Nancy Chavez of Grand Island, and Jean (Perry) Menard of Omaha; grandchildren, Garret (Margaret) Menard of Omaha, Connor Menard of Lincoln, and Serena Chavez of Grand Island; and nieces and nephews, Deanna (Daryl) Carlson of Atlanta, Tom (Carolee) Wise of Denver, and Susan Ekler of Placerville, CA.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, John; her parents; sisters, Louisa Wise, and Eleanor Gimple; and son-in-law, Donnie Chavez.
