Obituary

Norval "Kirk" Schwieger, 93, of Grand Island died Saturday, December 18, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Grand Island.

Funeral services will be at 2 pm Wednesday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Reverend Randy Fett will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Make a Wish Foundation or the Veterans Affairs Hospital Hospice.
Norval William Schwieger was born on December 16, 1917 in Grand Island to Max and Emma (Meier) Schwieger. He grew up in Grand Island and received his education in the Grand Island Public Schools.
He entered the United States Army on October 22, 1942. He served during WWII in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe with the 28th Field Artillery Battalion. He was honorably discharged on October 25, 1945.
Kirk was united in marriage to Betty Hare on July 9, 1941 in Grand Island. Following his discharge from the Army the couple made their home in Grand Island where he worked for Fairacres Dairy for 38 years. He also laid sod with Denny Knuth, worked at Skagway for 7 years and the Stuhr Museum. Kirk and Betty celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in July.
He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, the VFW, American Legion, Eagles, Saddle Club and the Platt-Duetsche. He enjoyed bowling and loved to dance with Betty.
Kirk is survived by his wife Betty of Grand Island, two daughters and sons in law, DeAnn (Jim) Schendt of Ainsworth, NE and Sheryl (Dave) Herman of Missouri Valley, IA.
Additional survivors include seven grandchildren, Douglas (Julie) Schendt, Jami (Benny) Burdick, Brenda (Mike) Winkelmann, Bruce (Kim) Schendt, Kris (Chris) Myers, Mark (Jenny) Schendt and Scott (Jodi) Schendt, and 18 Great Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Kirk, four brothers and two sisters.
