Mr. Grotz was born on May 2, 1947 in Grand Island to Delbert and Viola (Reher) Grotz. He grew up in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Northwest High School in 1965.
He entered the United States Army on August 30, 1966, serving as a truck driver in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged on May 25, 1969.
On October 25, 1969 he was united in marriage to Kathy Payton in St. Paul. The couple made their home in Grand Island where he was a truck driver for a local company. They later moved to Central City where he worked for Ulry Talbert and also worked as a farmhand for Ted Catlett. He then worked for Diamond Engineering as a bore rig operator. Dick retired from Diamond Engineering in 2001. Following his retirement he farmed with Don Rembolt and worked with other area farmers.
He enjoyed working on his racecar, which his brother Gary drove at Mid-Nebraska Speedway in Doniphan. Dick was very good at fabricating anything his friends and family may need, and always enjoyed working on cars as well. While they lived in Central City, Dick and Kathy would grow a large garden and bring their produce to the Farmer's Market. Most of all Dick enjoyed helping others, especially the area farmers.
He is survived by his two daughters; Cecelia Grotz and Brenda Grotz, both of Central City; four grandchildren, Jessica Smalls, Kaitlyn Luhn, Emily Roberts and Sarah Roberts; two great grandchildren, Dannielle Smalls and Bentlee Kohl; his former wife, Kathy Galusha of Central City; his brother Gary Grotz of Grand Island; sisters, Karen and Sharon and his best friend, Don Rembolt.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents.
