Shirley was born on May 17, 1927 in Grand Island to D. Frank and Birdie Bell (Boquette) Roush. She grew up in Grand Island and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School and Hastings College.

Shirley was united in marriage to John Charles Houselog on September 20, 1952 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. After marriage they lived in Council Bluffs, IA and moved to Grand Island 4 years later where they made their home. That home at 1408 S. Eddy St was destroyed in the 1980 Tornadoes. ABC interviewed John and Shirley on national television on June 4th, 1980. The YouTube video recently surfaced. After her children were all in school, she returned to the work force as a Dental Assistant for Dr. Glen Hadenfeldt and Dr. Russell Davis. Later she managed Fabrific Fabric Shop and then JoAnn's Fabrics, retiring at age 70 to babysit her grandson Timmy.

Shirley was a founding member of St. Leo's Church and later a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish. Shirley was also involved in Altrusa Club and Girl Scouts as a Leader. She loved to sew and was an avid reader until her memory failed.

Shirley is survived by her children, Monica (Tim) Taber of Doniphan, Greg (Cindy) Houselog of Grand Island, J. Gakle of Grand Island and Loretta (Jay) Stines of Sun City, AZ; grandchildren, J.P. Gakle, Nicole Meier, Molly Gakle, Brittany Houselog and Tim Taber; 9 great-grandchildren; and cousins Wes Wendt of Joplin, MO and B. Benton of Anderson, MO. Also, brothers-in-law: Harlan Houselog, Les Earhart, Lyle Ward and Phil Gauthier and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John in 2012 and her firstborn daughter, Lynn Gay on June 28, 1953.
