Thomas Fisher, 74, of Grand Island died Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the Veteran's Medical Center in Grand Island. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Father Mike Wetovick will celebrate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Monday, May 27, with a Rosary service at 7 P.M. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
Thomas was born on July 19, 1938 at Missouri Valley, IA to Russell and Sophia (Robak) Fisher. He grew up around Farwell and Loup City. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School and joined the Marines in June of 1956. Thomas was honorably discharged in 1962.
On March 23, 1961, Thomas was united in marriage to Linda Roggy at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. The couple made their home in Grand Island where he worked as a firefighter for 21 years. Thomas retired as training officer. He then started a second career as custodian at Westlawn Elementary School.
He was a member of VFW Post 1347, Platte Duetsch, and was a Salvation Army Volunteer bell ringer. Thomas was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed building birdhouses. He was known for playing practical jokes. The greatest joy in Thomas' life was his family and his faith in God. He was a great father and grandfather and was very much loved. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
Thomas is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda of Grand Island, NE; son, Russ (Flo) Fisher of Newport News, VA; daughter, Kindy (Greg) Massing of Grand Island, NE; son, Roger (Angela) Fisher of Grand Island, NE; 4 grandchildren, Jessica and Jake Fisher of VA, Isaiah Massing of OK, Lindsey Massing of Spain; 2 great grandchildren, Jonathan and Haley of VA.
Additional survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law; Ron (Judy) Roggy of Greeley, CO, Joan Kirkpatrick of Grand Island, NE, Sharon (Gene) Kilbosa of Iowa City, IA; and his beloved dog, Sam.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Gene Kirkpatrick, brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Dottie Roggy, and very close friend, Don Fillinger.
