Wayne was born February 27, 1924, to Leroy and Erma (Keller) Carriker in rural Harvard. He was the third of eight children, and worked alongside of his father. He wasn't able to play sports because he was the oldest boy. His father needed his help on the farm. In 1941, he graduated from Harvard High School.

He met and later married Mavis Jean Warner of rural Harvard on January 17, 1947. They had four children: David Carriker of Kennewick, WA; Bonna Wedige Tech of Grand Island; Geraldine Rust of Polk, NE; Shirley Meers of Hastings, NE. Even though he had severe polio in 1948, he farmed all his life in Clay and Hamilton counties.

Wayne loved the mountains. The first time he took his family to the mountains, he opened the window and said "Smell that pine". He even tried to ski when he was in his late sixties. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, and watching sports on TV. Wayne was the head of many horseshoe tournaments. He sang in the church choir at Harvard, Giltner, and Aurora, a few quartets with his brother, and duets with his wife at funerals and special occasions. Sometimes around the family you would hear him yodel.

Other family includes 14 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mavis, four sisters, three brothers-in-law, one son-in-law, and one great granddaughter.
